Mad Hatters Studio is situated in a beautiful Grade 2 listed barn in a historical complex on the edge of Dartmoor near Plymouth. The studio offers premium workshops in a welcoming, calm, creative space for people of all skills to learn, make and meet.
Workshops are presented by Sheron King, a designer maker working in ceramics, jewellery, mixed-media, painting, and textiles. There are also masterclasses and workshops by visiting, guest tutors.
The studio is Sheron’s work/live space, full of artworks, design pieces, collected vintage and ceramics. She has an intense addiction for resplendent colour, texture, layers and surface pattern, which is reflected in her personal collections on display in the studio.
Sheron has a strong ethos of sustainability and reuse, and uses collected ephemera and reclaimed textiles in all aspects of her work, intuitively and emotionally responding to the memories they hold and their materiality. The materials become repositioned and evoke journals of narratives, memories and nostalgia, as well as making a statement about environmental, political and social concern in a consumer-driven society. She aims to inspire and encourage others, through holistic-approach workshops that reuse materials, to explore their own creative potential and, in so doing, to raise their self-esteem and self-image.
People who visit the studio always comment on the very calming and nurturing effect – in fact the studio has been described as ‘a warm hug’.
